Case Refinishing

Case refinishing is one of the most challenging aspects of clock repair, especially if the damaged section only affects a small portion of the case and the results must blend in with and match the original.


Black Marble Finish and Gold Incising Restoration

As Found

This clock was suffering from a dull and irregular finish. The gold incising was mostly covered by dirt or eroded away completely.

After Refinishing

The marble finish was resurfaced with Slate Blacking and the gold incising restored. After completing the case, it was decided that the solid machined brass bezel should be polished to match the condition of the case and restore the entire clock to its former glory.

As Found

This clock was had several broken and poorly glued pieces including the woman's head and child. It also had spray paint drips and numerous areas with chipped paint.

After Refinishing

The case was completely stripped, the former repairs redone properly and then the case refinished to allow the fine detail of the sculpture to show through.

Cuckoo Clock Cleaning

This cuckoo was in generally good shape, but was aged, faded and dulled to the point of barely being able to see the details of the inlaid frame.

After Refinishing

After stripping and refinishing, the beauty and craftsmanship shows through. The paper dial was considered beyond repair and replaced with a wooden dial.


Banjo Clock Stripping and Restoration

As Found

This unfortunate clock suffered through additional aging after a misguided attempt to make it look better. Along the way, it lost it finial and base.

After Refinishing

The paint was stripped, new finish applied and missing pieces restored. The eagle finial was purchased, but the base was made from scratch. The reverse painted tablet of Mount Vernon was also touched up. The movement will be installed when it is repaired. The search for a replacement side arm continues.


Water Damage Refinishing

As Found

This clock suffered water damage to the feet, and the overall finish was dull and lifeless.

After Refinishing

The finish of the bottom section was stripped to bare wood, restained to match and then the whole clock received a new finish to rejuvenate it.


Case and Embossed Nameplate Restoration

This clock had a rusted flaking finish and the embossed numbers in the nameplate was faded.

After Refinishing

The case was stripped, rust removed and then repainted. The nameplate embossed numbers were repainted.
